Sweden Tax Rebate for Film Productions
Sweden offers a rebate for film production called the “Support for the Production of Audiovisual Works.” This is a 25% rebate on eligible production expenditures. This might sound all well and good at first, but Sweden’s program does come with some limitations.
One of the main drawbacks is the lack of a fixed per-project cap. Without a predetermined ceiling, the production companies are left in the dark as to how they should budget for high-budget films. Furthermore, Sweden’s annual budget for this incentive has a cap of $9.7 million (SEK 100 million), so funds could run out before all eligible projects are covered. Shoots must also navigate high minimum spending thresholds—$2.9 million for movies and nearly $1 million per episode for drama series. Having only two windows in which to submit each year, producers must work against strict deadlines.
While Sweden does offer a rebate program, its limitations make it a challenging location to shoot for most filmmakers. This is where Thailand’s stronger tax rebate system comes in, offering greater flexibility, convenience, and incentives to foreign productions.
Thailand Film Tax Rebate
Thailand’s incentive program is among the most competitive in the world, offering a cash rebate scheme that offers the maximum possible financial incentives for productions of any size. The rebate scheme is organized as follows:
- 15% rebate for productions spending at least 50 million Thai Baht (approx. $1.4M)
- 20% rebate for spending between 100–150 million Thai Baht (approx. $2.8–4.3M)
- 25% rebate for productions exceeding 160 million Thai Baht (approx. $4.3M)
Additionally, productions can receive extra rebates:
- 5% bonus for hiring Thai nationals in key positions
- 5% bonus for projects promoting Thai tourism, soft power, or a positive image of the country
- 3% bonus for filming in designated provinces
- 3% bonus for completing post-production in Thailand
Unlike Sweden, there is no limit per project in Thailand allowing productions to gain financial benefits. The rebate system is made fast, official, and reliable with the film permits done within 10 days. Having a single permit for unlimited locations across the whole country, Thailand provides a sense of ease for productions.
