Filming Locations in the Netherlands

Most film productions that come to the Netherlands will have a romantic-comedy or a drama- themed genre. However, the Netherlands is not only limited to accommodating those specific genres, the country contains many sceneries enough to fit any genre of film you can think of. From the canal city of Amsterdam to the more countryside part with farms and windmills like Friesland or even a pier and the oceanview of Urk. The Netherlands can amaze you with all the sceneries you wish to find in one country for one or multiple productions.

Amsterdam

The Famous view of the canal in the capital city of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

This view of the canal never gets old. Many romantic-comedy and drama movies love to bring their productions to Amsterdam because of its famous view. Amsterdam is referred to as the “Venice of the North”, for its large number of canals. Presently, Amsterdam is now designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. “The Fault in Our Stars” was filmed in most parts of Amsterdam. Following that, an action-comedy film starring Ryan Reynold ”The Hitman’s Bodyguard” and many other blockbuster films and series productions were set in Amsterdam.

Haarlem Station

Sunset at Haarlem Train Station looks great for a grand ending scene.

Not far from the city of Amsterdam, there’s the Haarlem station; a train station in the capital city without an overflow of people in the shot, perfect spot to shoot! A Sequel of a great heist film “Ocean’s Twelve” once used this particular location, the Haarlem Station, in replacement of the Amsterdam Central Station.

Friesland

Suburban area of Friesland that contains many windmills and farms.

Friesland is a province located in the northern part of the Netherlands. This countryside  contains many scenes of farms, windmills, and nature. This country was used as a background for the horror movie called “Speak No Devil.”

IJsselmeer

Sunset at IJsselmeer, this view would look stunning in any of your film productions.

IJsselmeer is a closed-off inland bay in the central part of the Netherlands. Bordering three provinces of the Netherlands, this precise location was used in many seascape scenes of the movie “Dunkirk” by Christopher Nolan. If your next film has seascapes or ocean scenes but you don’t want to risk taking your production out physically ocean-wide, we would recommend this spot, IJsselmeer.

Urk

A fishing pier covered with mist is a typical morning in Urk.

The pier of Urk has also been used in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.” It’s located in the Flevoland province in the central part of the Netherlands which is part of the IJsselmeer. This location would be a great match for any type of film production you want to produce.
