Romania Tax Rebate for Film Productions

Regarding foreign film shoots and tax rebates, Romania is a competitive destination. The nation’s Tax Rebate Scheme offers a cash rebate of 35-45%. Productions promoting Romania specifically can also receive an additional 10% bonus above the rebate.

But while the figures look good, there are limitations. The rebate is issued on a first-come-first-served basis, so one can’t necessarily bank on receiving money once the €50M yearly cap has been hit. Movies must pass a cultural test and partner with a local production firm, adding extra layers of bureaucracy. One of the biggest disadvantages is the country’s payment history delay, as some foreign productions are still left unpaid.

In contrast, Thailand’s film rebate system offers a more reliable, accessible, and transparent process, making it an ideal location for filmmakers looking for efficiency and financial security.

Thailand Film Tax Rebate

Thailand’s Film Incentive Measures provide an alternative for filmmakers looking for reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The program offers a rebate structure based on qualified spending:

  • 15% rebate for productions spending at least 50 million Thai Baht (approx. US$1.4M).
  • 20% rebate for productions spending 100–150 million Thai Baht (approx. US$2.8–4.3M).
  • 25% rebate for productions exceeding 160 million Thai Baht (approx. US$4.3M).
    • Additional incentives include:
      • 5% bonus for productions employing Thai nationals in key positions.
      • 5% bonus for productions that promote tourism, soft power, or a positive image of Thailand.
      • 3% bonus for productions filmed in designated provinces.
      • 3% bonus for productions completing post-production in Thailand.

Unlike Romania, no cultural tests or close local partnerships are needed in Thailand. The rebate is simplified with one permit valid for unlimited locations and film permits granted within 10 days. There is no limit per project making Thailand a very attractive, hassle-free option for filmmakers worldwide.
