Netherlands Rebate for Film Productions
When thinking about places to film internationally, the Netherlands offers a clear tax rebate system through the Netherlands Film Production Incentive. This rebate is 35% for feature films with certain rules. To qualify, at least 75% of the digital production costs for a film must be spent on Dutch-taxed entities. There are extra incentives for documentaries and animated films, but these are at lower rates of 25% and 10% respectively.
This system gives money support to shows, but it has some rules to think about. Each project can only get up to $1.65M, which might limit how big productions can be. Also, the Netherlands has a yearly limit of $21.2M for movies and $8.3M for big series, so there’s tough competition and no sure approval. Projects are judged by a points system and need at least 75 points out of 210 to maybe get the money, which adds more difficulty.
Filmmakers must also meet strict rules to qualify. They need to show that their production company has a past in the Netherlands, EU, EEA, or Switzerland. Also, they must spend at least $166,000 in the country, with at least half of their funding ready when they apply.
While the Netherlands offers a structured rebate, Thailand presents a more attractive alternative with higher returns, fewer restrictions, and a more streamlined process.
Thailand Film Tax Rebate
For international productions, Thailand has a competitive tax rebate system that is better than the Netherlands. The rebate starts at 15% for spending over $1.4M, going up to 20% for spending over $2.8M, and 35% for spending over $4.3M. Moreover, Thailand offers extra incentives.
- 5% for hiring Thai nationals in key positions
- 5% for projects promoting tourism, soft power, or a positive image of Thailand
- 3% for filming in designated provinces
- 3% for productions that conduct post-production in Thailand
Unlike the Netherlands, Thailand does not set a limit for each project, letting high-budget productions get the most out of their rebates with no caps. The process to apply is also much smoother, with no cultural test, one permit for all locations, and permits given in just 10 days—a big difference from the more complex process in the Netherlands.
Beyond financial benefits, Thailand provides an unparalleled filming experience with stunning natural landscapes, world-class production facilities, and a rich cinematic history.
