Lithuania Film Tax Incentive for Film Productions
Lithuania’s Film Tax Incentive promotes a 30% tax rebate of the production costs accrued in the country. All these benefits come with strict requirements: a passing of the cultural test; at least 80% of production costs should be spent in Lithuania, and 51% of the crew is required to be from the EEA. A production company needs to apply on behalf of the project, being registered in Lithuania, while having a minimum in-country spend of approximately $47,400 (€43,000).
The program has its shortcomings that may hamper production flexibility. For instance, projects have to put up with annual budget caps and there is no clear guideline on application deadlines. That’s where Thailand comes into the picture, offering a much more flexible and lucrative tax rebate policy.
Thailand Film Tax Rebate
Thailand’s incentive measures for film are second to none in international production and make the country the filmmaking hub of the world. It offers a cash rebate program with three-tier qualifications, topping out at as much as 30% if spending is over $4.3 million or 160 million Thai Baht. Additional incentives of 5% are provided in the case of the employment of Thai nationals in major positions, projects which can help with tourism or soft power, minor ones in cases of filming in certain provinces, or post-production work of the country. Unlike Lithuania, there is no cap on projects, and permits are issued within no more than 10 days to ensure seamless shooting.
What sets Thailand apart is the commitment towards nurturing creativity with no cultural test restrictions. One gets unlimited filming locations, one permit system, and effective and efficient administration procedures. The country’s culture, brilliant locations, or economically viable production resource base, coupled together, makes Thailand a perfect filmmaking destination.
