Georgia Film Rebate (“Film in Georgia”) for Film Production

Georgia offers filmmakers its “Film in Georgia” rebate program. This offers a 20% cash rebate on qualified expenses, with an extra 5% available if the production meets certain points within the cultural test. Since there is no per-project budget cap or even an annual budget limit, Georgia’s rebate program seems quite uncomplicated for dealing with production expenses.

However, there are a couple of drawbacks. Minimum expenditure requirements are substantial, with $198,500 for feature films and $39,700 for animation films. The process also lacks transparency on issues such as application deadlines and the eligibility of eligible expenses, which are only recognized at the time of registration.

Whereas Georgia’s incentives are indeed offering baseline savings, the process can be rather difficult for a production not well-versed in the local system. This is where Thailand enters the frame as a better option, offering higher rebates and an efficient production experience.

Thailand Film Tax Rebate

For benefits accrued, the film incentive measures are unrivaled. Providing a tiered rebate system from 15% and scaling up to 30% on qualified spend over $4.3 million, Thailand will ensure large-format projects enjoy unmatched savings.

Additional Incentives:

  • 5% for employing Thai nationals in key positions.
  • 5% for promoting tourism, soft power, or Thailand’s positive image.
  • 3% for shooting in designated provinces.
  • 3% for post-production work in Thailand.

Unlike Georgia, Thailand offers no cap on per-project rebates, which is very good for productions of any size. Also, the film permitting process in Thailand is both fast and reliable; permits are issued in just 10 days for unlimited locations.
