Brazil Tax Rebate for Film Productions

Brazil’s Programa de Incentivo à Produção de Filmes (PIPF) offers tax incentives for Film productions. The country provides a cash rebate between 15% and 20% for productions that qualify in line with specific rules, and additional incentives as a proportion of those offered by São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The incentives range from 30-35% in Rio and 20-30% in São Paulo.

Films shot in Rio can qualify for a maximum rebate worth $380,000 — but only if extremely specific conditions are fulfilled, including featuring several of Rio’s locations and having its first release in six or more non-Portuguese speaking nations. There are incentives for commercials and series, but the eligibility is dependent on co-producer residence and filming requirements by region.

Brazil’s complex and inconsistent incentive structure, budget caps, and eligibility conditions make it a hard program to work with. Location requirements of shooting in Rio and São Paulo restricts

productions from scouting other locations for the scenes. On top of that, for films shooting in Rio it is required to use production companies within the city and the production must be concluded after 18 months of the initial deposit. Application clarity is an issue, with deadlines and guidelines often varying or lacking transparency.

On the other side of the map, however, lies a far more easy and production-friendly destination: Thailand.

Thailand Film Tax Rebate

Thailand’s Film Incentive Measures were designed with filmmakers in mind — providing generous tax rebates and support for foreign productions.

Productions that commit a minimum of 50 million Thai Baht (approximately US$ 1.4 million) locally become eligible for 15% rebate in cash, rising to 30% rebate for productions with an investment greater than 160 million Baht (approximately US$ 4.3 million). That is only the beginning.

An additional 5% for the employment of Thai nationals for principal positions, and a further 5% for productions boosting tourism or images of Thailand as a positive image. There is also further 3% for production in specified provinces and a further 3% if post-production is within Thailand.

No per-project cap, no cultural test, and a film permit issued within just 10 days. Whether you’re shooting a blockbuster, a TV drama, or a documentary, Thailand’s incentive structure is simple, fast, and rewarding.

Thailand Filming Locations

Pine Forest

Pine forests in the northern region of Thailand blanket the mountains and hills, setting up a perfect backdrop and ambiance for any film production.

Western Houses

Unknown to many, western houses are located outside of Bangkok, ideal for filming. These houses are beautifully built, structurally sound, and mimic homes built in the West.

Studios

Bangkok is home to a multitude of studios, equipped with the latest equipment, sound systems, lights, and everything a production team needs. Filmmakers can easily find and rent a studio in Bangkok without traveling far to find one.

City

Bangkok’s bustling metropolis with neon-dotted cityscape sets the tone for any film production in the heart of the city. Meandering through the heart is the famed Chao Phraya River, perfect for capturing heartfelt and romantic scenes along the river boasting a rich backdrop showcasing Thailand’s icon temples and pagodas.

Islands

With over a thousand islands dotting Thailand’s rolling coastline and the Andaman Sea, each island has charm, mystery, and beauty. Towering, jagged cliffs remain untouched by human hands and serve as a home to the wild animals hiding within the rock crevasses or underwater schisms.

Beaches

Thailand’s sun-kissed beaches are second to none. Layered with soft, white, silky sand, crystal clear waters, and lush terrain, Thailand’s southern beaches serve as the ideal filming location for dramas, romantic comedies, and action and adventure films.

Mountains

North Thailand is home to impressive, lush mountain ranges. During winter months, Doi Inthanon and Doi Suthep are cloaked in a sea of fog and the grass is blanketed by dewdrops every morning.
