Azerbaijan Tax Incentives for Film Productions

Although Azerbaijan’s film industry is slowly making efforts to attract filmmakers, the country currently has no specific tax rebate programs available for international film productions. The local cinematographic firms do have a three-year profit tax exemption on entrepreneurial activities, effective from January 1, 2024. It applies exclusively to domestic companies and therefore does not involve international productions.

This could mean significant challenges for international filmmakers, as the production costs are barely mitigated by the government’s support. Without rebates, international filmmakers must figure out Azerbaijan’s complex landscape on their own, and most of the time face serious logistical difficulties, especially regarding permits and professional crews.

While these conditions might sound intimidating, Thailand’s tax rebate structure is in strong contrast, offering filmmakers a variety of incentives and unparalleled production support.

Thailand Film Tax Rebate

Thailand has emerged as a premier destination for international film production, thanks to its comprehensive tax rebate system and unmatched production infrastructure.

It also has a baseline rebate of 15% and other additional bonuses that increase to as much as 20% under specific conditions, depending on factors like boosting tourism, the use of Thai talent, and other criteria. In addition, there’s a special economic booster from Thailand for projects with more than $2.9 million in local expenditure. With a cap at $4.4 million per project, it certainly is one of the more generous but still accessible programs.

A basic production rebate in Thailand is granted up to 30% rebate, with a cap at $4.4 million per project (THB 150 million). They spend over $1.5 million-THB 50 million in Thai services, have on board a local coordinator for assistance and coordination, and obtain prior permit assistance; thus, this incentive helps make Thailand an economically logical and highly desirable location in which to film.
